After earning a reckless driving conviction for rear-ending an 18-wheeler in 2012, Lindsay Lohan was ordered to complete 240 hours of community service. A California judge has now decided that the actress must redo 125 of those hours, saying that the time she spent shaking hands and hanging out with fans does not qualify as time served. Santa Monica Chief Deputy City Attorney Terry White told the Associated Press in January, “I’d love to hang out with a celebrity all day and see their life, but that’s not community service.”
Community service is a not-uncommon alternative to jail time for many Hollywood A-listers. Who else gave time instead of doing it?

Yeezus pled guilty to misdemeanor battery last year for the assault of a paparazzo and, in exchange, received 250 hours of community service. Although some judges stipulate what type of community service is to be performed, other times the decision is left up to the defendant. In this case, West chose to do his time at the Los Angeles Trade Technical College, where he shared his “personal experiences in the fashion biz,” with students.
2. Kurt Busch
The NASCAR driver was fined $580 and sentenced to 50 hours of community service for a 2006 incident, which resulted in several traffic violation charges: speeding, following too closely and passing in no-passing zone. Busch worked off some of those hours at an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game, where he threw the first pitch and signed autographs.
3. Naomi Campbell
The former supermodel pled guilty to misdemeanor assault in 2007 when she beamed her maid in the head with a bejeweled BlackBerry. Besides a fine and anger-management classes, Campbell was ordered to complete five days of community service. She spent her days mopping the floors of a New York City sanitation depot, where she accessorized her protective gloves and dust mask with stilettos and a fur jacket.
4. Chris Brown
After he pled guilty to assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, Brown was ordered to perform six months, or 1,400 hours, of community labor. According to logs analyzed by the Associated Press, Brown allegedly spent 371 hours picking up trash, 82 hours painting, 56 hours destroying old police records and 77.5 hours stripping and waxing floors, among other things.
5. Justin Bieber
The singer was smacked with a five-day community labor requirement for egging a neighbor’s house last year. He will reportedly paint walls and move office furniture at L.A.’s MusiCares, a foundation that provides emergency financial, medical or personal care for music industry workers in need. He was also sentenced to complete anger management classes, ordered to pay $80,900 and told to stay away from the neighbor for two years.
